The Citizen Theatre Playwright on his dangerous new play:
I lost my partner less than two years ago, and ended up coming out at his funeral (to the
ministers and his friends who didn't know me). When I take writer meetings in Los Angeles, I
come out as a matter of course - a far cry from where I was a few decades ago when I didn't
want anyone to know. Now I'm coming out (again) in public with this play. BLACK/OUT STORIES
is an exciting project for me because each interview bears some striking and unexpected
relationship to my story. It is at once personal and universal. The specificity of the population
I'm interviewing (Black LGBT folks) makes it wholly unique.
