Our Citizen Theatre
UNDERGROUND STUDIO has two tracks: the development of new work by professional and emerging artists and another track focusing on nurturing theatrical creativity in our audience community.
The theatre's unique new work development approach is lead by producing artists and it is influenced by their background in black arts aesthetics, art activism, movement, somatics, Group Theatre, Chekhov, Viewpoints, Suzuki, and collaborative theatre approaches. Guests artists invited by the producing artists are brought in to further the development of the work and processes.
FIRE! STAGES invests meaningful resources into productions that allow the full actualization of new black queer theatre to have a production life, beyond countless staged readings. This at the same time empowering black queer theatre to be created and staged for us and by us. The program produce work written by current and past resident playwrights, giving artists and the greater public unprecedented and sustained opportunities to reflect more deeply on common yet often-untold struggles.
