The Associate Artist & Playwright on her dangerous new play:
As a Caribbean black queer playwright who grew up in a conscious Nation of Islam home
where black was right, gay was not, and identity was hugely important there always seems
to be potholes of unanswered questions. Why, What’s, When, Now you see I don’t get that,
plagued my childhood memories. I believe what makes my voice as a playwright unique in
telling this story is my need to understand issues within my community that go unanswered and
the urgency behind changing these issues now so that they’re not carried over into another
generation.
I am a self-taught playwright and like most playwrights, I write to address what I
don’t understand. But what I bring to my writing is a sense of honestly and yearning to grow
from these questions so that I feel whole and comfortable in the world that I’m helping to
build. I believe SHE WHO STRUGGLES sets out to do just that.
